The
eLCie Building a Sustainable World software is a new suite of tools that enables
decision-makers to view a product's environmental impacts with the flick of
a key stroke. Created by The Green Standard.org, this suite makes it easy
to discover what effects various products may have on the environment.
The first enables manufacturers to efficiently produce a life cycle assessment
(LCA) of their products an analysis of the environmental impacts of a product
from raw material extraction, through manufacturing and installation, and
then through its useful life and disposal. The second tool presents the resulting
impact analysis in a simple-to-interpret format over the web for use by architects,
contractors, facility managers even an individual home-builder. The third
piece of this powerful suite brings the environmental impacts into Autodesk's
new comprehensive building software program Revit¡, allowing architects and
builders to see the cumulative impact of their decisions with respect to the
building as a whole.
The Green Standard.org has advanced the state-of-the-art in each piece of
the product suite by engaging leading consultants to assist them. Working
with Sylvatica, a world-renowned, innovative LCA consultancy headed by Dr.
Gregory Norris, professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, The Green
Standard.org has driven the development of automated software that reduces
both the cost and the effort required for manufacturers to produce sound LCAs.
In addition to providing impact information to their customer base through
the eLCie tool, this new tool enables manufacturers to see quickly high impact
areas as targets for reduction and to analyze new developments before committing
to manufacture.
The eLCie graphic user interface tool is a collaboration with Tellart, a web
development firm integrating the science of human interaction with the art
of web design. By creating a clear yet condensed representation of scientifically
robust LCA data, The Green Standard.org and Tellart are providing specifiers
and purchasers with a user-friendly way to evaluate and compare the environmental
impacts of products from cradle to cradle.
Participating manufacturers to date include: Bentley
Prince Street; C & A Floorcoverings;
ECOsurfaces
Commercial Flooring; Herman Miller;
Interface Flooring
Systems; J & J/Invision;
Lees Carpet; LITECONTROL;
Mannington; Milliken;
Mohawk Industries; Philips
Lighting; and Sylvania.
The eLCie Program is part of The Green Standard's broad mission to advance
the design and use of sustainably developed products through exhibits, technology
and training. It is their intent to make continuous improvements to the technology,
incorporating recommendations from others as resources permit.
